A few months ago, I made these lovely gold letters purely by accident as I was attempting to do something completely different while playing around in what I consider the best free photo editor, Paint.net.
Earlier this week, I realized that I needed to create a matching backdrop/outline, but for the life of me, I could not remember how I got this effect the first time. I mean, it could have been any number of effects in any number of layers, and in who knows what sequence? I didn’t.
Here are a couple of my early attempts to figure it out:
Not so great, either of them.
I spent hours trying to tap into my higher self, at least a few minutes attempting to source the answer from my soul, and still more hours lurking around the gates of my subconscious, hoping for entry so I could dig around a bit.
Finally today, much to my relief, I stumbled upon the answer and was able to create this gold outline.
Not too bad. I’m headed in the right direction!
I do all of my work in Paint.net, which is completely free and open source, so I can’t make any money by sending you there, but I don’t care. I will forever and always promote Paint.net. It is, in my opinion, the best free photo editor out there. and maybe even the best photo editor of all.
I have yet to come across anything that can be done in Photoshop that I can’t do in Paint.net , and Photoshop is WAY too expensive for me to even consider; especially now that they charge MONTHLY instead of allowing outright purchases as they did in the past.
I do have an older version of Photoshop that I use only when a Photoshop specific file is called for or if I need to change the color space of my work, but that is all I use it for and then I’m right back over to my trusty Paint.net.
There are soooo many plugins created by Paint.net users that the functionality is just tremendous. And I like the idea of community contributions because really, that’s how we all get what we want, by contributing our piece.
I have not attempted to create my own plugin yet, but I believe one could do so using the CodeLab plugin at Paint.net. I may give it a go one day, but for now…there are more gold letters and banners needing to be created!
